Succession Planning

Faced with an aging work force and increased retirement incentives, a municipal police force needed to guarantee continuity of effective leadership. The department developed a succession plan to establish a process for finding and developing a pool of leaders. But the success of the plan depended on managers and supervisors stepping outside of their comfort zone and conducting career development counseling sessions with current officers.


The TEG Solution

TEG designed a half-day workshop on Conducting The Career Development Counseling Session. This highly participative session provided managers and supervisors within the police department with the knowledge and skills they need to conduct voluntary career development sessions focused on short-term career goals, long-term career goals, and specific training and development strategies to achieve those goals.

Following a successful pilot session, TEG trained and certified city trainers to deliver the workshop on an ongoing basis. The program was extremely successful in addressing the participants' concerns and preparing them to implement the department's succession planning process. Managers and supervisors developed and implemented a concrete plan of action to conduct career development counseling sessions that incorporated the department's Career Development form and utilized existing career development resources.
